Aubergine Restaurant opened its doors in September 1996 with a vision to create a gastronomic haven in an atmosphere of timeless elegance where diners could enjoy innovative and creative combinations that excite the senses and pique curiosity. Housed in the former 1830 home of the first Chief Justice of the Cape, Sir John Wylde, Aubergine is situated in the historic Gardens area of Cape Town. Recent refurbishments combined the old and the new into a stylish contemporary venue. The ambience is elegant and refined with the décor complementing beautiful yellowwood tables, original wooden sash windows and Knysna Blackwood floors. During the summer months, guests enjoy al fresco lunches on the lush terrace and magical dinners under the African stars. In winter a quaint fireplace provides a cosy atmosphere. Sophisticated, private dining areas are available for intimate dinners, birthdays, business functions and other special celebrations.
Harald Bresselschmidt was born in the pristine Eifel Region of Germany close to the Belgian border. As a child he was strongly influenced by life on a working dairy farm, instilling in him a love of the land and an appreciation for fresh produce. Harald worked in restaurants from an early age spending time predominately in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and London before doing his Masters in Gastronomy. His cuisine is based on a philosophy of natural flavours and seasonal ingredients, and a number of his dishes are infused with Asian influences. His team, committed to detail and fundamental techniques, and the imagination and craft of his kitchen, create innovative yet discerning combinations and food experiences.
